Practice Lab Corrosion and Insulation

This project focuses on developing innovations for the prevention, detection and repair can corrosion in the Flanders-Netherlands border region. It includes the establishment of a test facility, the creation of a digital platform for knowledge sharing and the development of a curriculum for Corrosion and Insulation Technicians. The project is coordinated by Kic-MPI and financed within the Interreg V program.

The Flanders-Netherlands border region is characterized by one of the largest concentrations of process industry in the world, and also by the presence of a lot of water-bound infrastructure. In this region, corrosion is one of the main degradation processes of installations and infrastructure and thus the potential cause of failures, downtime, unsafety and environmental damage. In order to maintain the competitive position of the industry, it is precisely crucial that the plants and infrastructure can operate optimally, failure-free, safely and with minimal environmental impact. Corrosion control is therefore a high priority for all links in the maintenance chain.

Therefore, all parties in the maintenance chain need a physical place where innovations aimed at prevention, detection and repair of corrosion can be tested and developed - a place where industrial research can be conducted and experimental development can take place. In addition, there is a need for a network where practical information about corrosion can be found and a stronger curriculum at educational institutions around corrosion prevention and detection.

Therefore, this project has the following objectives:

  • Realizing physical infrastructure to conduct industrial research and enable experimental development around the whole corrosion problem.
  • The collection and sharing of knowledge related to corrosion problems for all parties in the maintenance chain. A digital platform will be developed for this purpose.
  • Establish a basic curriculum for Corrosion and Insulation Technicians at the senior and intermediate levels.

This project is coordinated by Kic-MPI (Middelburg, Netherlands). Knowledge institutions Hogere Zeevaartschool, Sirris and Scalda are partners in the project, together with companies Zeeland Refinery, North Sea Ports, Xervon, and Kaefer. The Hogere Zeevaartschool is building a test installation in the port of Ostend for maritime corrosion research, and is collaborating on a course on corrosion.

Project Praktijklab Corrosion and Insulation was funded within the Interreg V program Flanders-Netherlands, the cross-border
cooperation program with financial support from the European Regional Development Fund.
