When can I apply for an assessment?

You may present yourself for an assessment starting from 60 sailing days before reaching the minimum required sea service, as mentioned in the STCW convention chapters II/1, III/1, III/6.

How can I apply for an assessment?

You must register for an assessment and pay the registration fee of €250 via the website: www.amacademy.be/

How is this assessment conducted?

These are the steps to follow:

1. Verify that you meet the necessary requirements for the assessment and ensure you have all the required documents ready:

  1. Valid identity card or passport,
  2. Proof of sea service time obtained from Belgium ministry of mobility, department Shipping via STCW95@mobilit.fgov.be Check in the table above when you can apply for an assessment for chapters II/1 (officer in charge of a navigational watch), III/1 (officer in charge of an engine room watch) and III/6 (electrotechnical officer) of the STCW-convention
  3. CTRB, ISF-format for II/1 or III/1, ICS format for III/6 or equivalent
  4. All project work
  5. Certificates, valid on the day of the final assessment:
  • Basic Safety Training (BST),
  • Medical first aid (MFA),
  • Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats (PSCRB)
  • Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) certificates.

2. Register for an assessment, and pay the registration fee via the AMA website

3. You receive a confirmation mail from AMA with the date, time and location you must present yourself in person (online assessments are not possible),

4. Present yourself at the location on the date and time indicated in the confirmation mail,

5. There is an administrative check of the necessary documents (a-d under nr 1). This check can result in:

  • Check OK: the assessment can start,
  • Check not OK: the assessment cannot take place. You receive feedback on the administrative part. You need to register for a new assessment and pay the registration fee again.

6. First part of the assessment: check of CTR:

The assessors check the entries in your CTRB and prepare the assessment interview. The result of the CTRB assessment can be:

  • “Pass” assessment CTRB: the assessment interview takes place between yourself and the assessors
  • “Fail” assessment CTRB:  you receive feedback from the assessors on how to improve the entries in the CTRB and what to adapt before you apply again for an assessment;

7. Second part of the assessment: the assessment interview:

The assessors will ask you questions about the entries in your CTRB to evaluate your competences.

The assessment interview can also result in:

  • “Pass” final assessment interview: you can collect your final assessment certificate at the administration.
  • “Fail” final assessment interview: you receive feedback from the assessors on why you failed the assessment interview how to improve your competence.

 

 

What language is spoken during the assessment interview?

You can choose to do the assessment interview in Dutch, French or English.

What documents do I need to bring to the final assessment?

  1. Valid identity card or passport
  2. Proof of sea service time obtained from Belgium ministry of mobility, department Shipping. The assessment can only proceed if all the required documents are present, valid and complete. If you fail to do so, the assessment will be cancelled, and you will need to register again through the website and pay a new registration fee. Please note that the original registration fee will not be refunded if the assessment cannot take place due to missing, incomplete, invalid documents listed above.

 

 

Who will be the assessors?

The assessment committee consists of two people, of whom at least one assessor is a member of the AMA teaching staff. Both assessors have, as prescribed by the STCW in section A-I/6, followed a assessment methods and techniques course. At least one of the assessors holds the required qualifications for the specific type and level of training or assessment of seafarers' competence, both on board and ashore (Article 14 §2 C of the Royal Decree of 22/08/2020).

What’s next when I pass?

Upon passing the assessment, you will immediately receive a final assessment certificate from AMA. With this certificate, you can apply for your Certificate of Competence (COC) through the Ministry of Mobility and Transport via the Crewcert website.

What’s next when I fail?

If you do not pass the assessment, the assessors will provide both oral and written feedback, along with specific guidance on how to improve your skills. Once you are confident that you have met the conditions outlined by the assessors, you may reapply for the assessment by registering through the website.

Is appeal possible when the result of the assessment is “fail”?

Yes, appeal is possible. You must direct the appeal to the federal ministry of transport via
