Scholarship ‘Generieke Beurzen’

The Antwerp Maritime Academy has entitled to have about 2 scholarships of the type ‘Generieke Beurzen’ to go outside the EU. To obtain these scholarships, AMA needs to apply for them. This means that we need to know in advance the candidates wishing to use these scholarships.

The programme

The Flemish government awards grants for student mobility to countries outside Europe that are not included as program countries in the Erasmus+ programme. The aim of this scholarship program is to stimulate mobility for study, internship or thesis research in countries outside Europe, complementary to the possibilities of the classic Erasmus+ programme. More information about the programme can be found at https://www.studentsonthemove.be/en/scholarships/generieke-beurzen

For several years, we have a good cooperation with the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (UCLV), Santa Clara, Cuba (www.uclv.edu.cu). Due to our limited number of scholarships, we decided to dedicate our resources in that cooperation. A research internship of at least 1 month as part of your dissertation is the easiest way to organize your stay. Bear in mind that you do your research in an international context and that we ask you to write your dissertation in English. The research group Automatics and Electrical Engineering is specialized in the topics given below but other related topics can be discussed as well. Through this department, it is possible to find other co-promotors at the UCLV in other domains.

  • Building low-cost monitoring systems to evaluate air quality (in for example the harbour of Cienfuegos)
  • Building low-cost buoys that monitors several water-related parameters
  • Developing an autonomous boat (for example to map pollutants in the surface water)
  • Other topics such as data processing, user-friendly data visualization, internet of things, big data are also welcome. The list is not limitative.

Application and selection procedure
  • Step 1: A call will be launched and spread by Blackboard.
  • Step 2: Show your interest by sending an email to the coordinator of Internationalisation (see contacts at the bottom of the page). The grants are awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so be fast in your response.
  • Step 3: Prepare a title and abstract of your research in English (half a page). Also find a promotor at the Antwerp Maritime Academy. The coordinator of Internationalisation will give you feedback on the abstract. Your application can be withdrawn if your abstract does not fulfil a minimal quality.
  • Step 4: Only when the abstract is considered as ready, a request to the receiving institute will be sent. The coordinator of Internationalisation will perform this step.
  • Step 5: If the receiving institute has accepted your application, then the final administration will be done in collaboration with the coordinator of Internationalisation.
  • Step 6: After you have signed the grant agreement, the first 70% of your scholarship will be paid after your confirmation that you have arrived.
  • Step 7: When you have completed and submitted all formal documents your testimonial about your stay after returning home, the final 30% of your scholarship will be paid.

Scholarship Erasmus+ - Studying abroad

The Antwerp Maritime Academy is participating in the Erasmus+ programme. The Erasmus+ programme aims to support actions in the fields of education and training for the period 2021-2027. The programme gives opportunities to students and staff to spend a period abroad to increase their skills and employability.

The programme

We have agreements with various maritime institutions in Europe where you can go. This list can always be expanded if the desired organisation is not listed. However, the preparation of such an agreement takes some time, so inform the coordinator internationalization on time. The goal of Erasmus+ is that you compose a programme of courses you want to follow at a certain institute. You do your exams at the receiving institute and we take over the scores you earned abroad. Unfortunately, STCW-related courses cannot be replaced by courses followed elsewhere. Therefore, you can only replace the optional courses in the master or do your dissertation abroad. You can take any course that you want as long as you have not followed it before (or if the overlap with already followed courses is limited).

Application and selection procedure
  • Step 1: Show your interest by sending an email to the coordinator of Internationalisation. The grants are awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
  • Step 2: Make an appointment with the coordinator internationalisation to discuss your interest.
  • Step 3: The most critical point in the Erasmus application is drawing up your program. Check the website of the institute you want to go and check their program. Some institutes have special programs for Erasmus students. Also, check the language of the courses you want to follow. We can support you in online language courses if you want.
  • Step 4: Once you have selected your program, you need to prepare the learning agreement. Your heads of faculties must agree with your program. Then it needs to be signed by you, the Antwerp Maritime Academy and by the institute that will receive you.
  • Step 5: The receiving institute often asks for your Transcript of Records (the scores of previous exams) and the European health card. Sometimes they use a special portal to submit your demand. Be sure you collect all the appropriate documents for submission. The receiving institute must agree with the program.
  • Step 6: Once both sending and receiving institute agrees with your program, you have to sign the grant agreement just before your departure. Once you send us the certificate of arrival, the first 70% of your scholarship will be paid.
  • Step 7: After you have completed and submitted all formal documents (e.g., certificate of attendance, questionnaire by Erasmus, etc.) and your testimonial, the final 30% of your scholarship will be paid.

Scholarship Erasmus+ - Traineeship after graduation

The classic Erasmus+ programme is limited due to the obligation that all STCW-related courses must be followed and evaluated by the Antwerp Maritime Academy. However, we can offer you a more flexible solution to overcome that problem. The 13 Flemish Universities of Applied Sciences & Arts have a common project that allows you to gain work experience through an internship after graduation.

The programme

You can apply for a traineeship at a company outside Belgium (even outside Europe) and gain your first work experience or do your trial period while being paid by Erasmus. For example, through an internship you can enter a certain sector that is perhaps a bit outside your field of study. The maximum duration for a traineeship in a European country is 12 months, for a non-European country 6 months.

After graduation, you will then officially be a jobseeker and you will follow an education for job seekers. In that way, you are allowed to go abroad as job seeker. You cannot combine a traineeship with an employment contract. More information can be found at: https://www.studentsonthemove.be/en/scholarships/erasmusplus-traineeship-after-graduation

Application and selection procedure
  • Step 1: Inform the coordinator Internationalisation if you are interested in a traineeship after graduation.
  • Step 2: Students must search for a traineeship in an organisation themselves. Find an organization with an address outside Belgium that is willing to take you as an intern.
  • Step 3: Register your internship before graduation, thus before the date that your scores are officially announced. Registration is not possible after graduation. Registration can be done using the button at the bottom of the page at https://www.studentsonthemove.be/en/scholarships/erasmusplus-traineeship-after-graduation
  • Step 4: The grant will be awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, until there is no more funding available in the budget. Funding will only be received when:
    • The candidate is registered before the deadline of graduation;
    • The learning agreement is signed by the trainee, the traineeship supervisor and the higher education institution from which the trainee is graduated before the start of the traineeship;
    • The traineeship is completed within 12 months after graduation of a graduate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
  • Step 5: The grant agreements and payments are done by the VHLUR, the consortium coordinator.

Scholarship ‘Global Minds’

The 13 Flemish Universities of Applied Sciences & Arts - including the Antwerp Maritime Academy - joined their forces within the framework of the ‘Global Minds’- programme (VLIR-UOS). With the common Global Minds programme (travel grants, research projects) the Antwerp Maritime Academy wants to raise awareness for the 'Global South' among students and staff. The participation of students in this program will depend on the internal goals defined by AMA.

The programme

For this programme, we concentrate our scholarships in the cooperation with the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (UCLV) in Santa Clara, Cuba through research internships of at least 1 month. Bear in mind that you do your research in an international context and that we will ask you to write your dissertation in English.

Application and selection procedure
  • Step 1: A call will be launched and spread by Blackboard.
  • Step 2: Show your interest by sending an email to the coordinator of internationalisation. The grants are awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so be fast in your response.
  • Step 3: Prepare a title and abstract of your research in English (half a page).

Language courses

If you go abroad and the courses are given in a language you do not master sufficiently, you need to follow a language course in advance. This requires some preparation before you go. Most institutes require a language level B1 or B2. Some students prefer to go at an institute that offer courses in English. The courses Maritime English at AMA results in an English level B2.

The programme

The Erasmus+ Online Linguistic Support (OLS) supports language learning for Erasmus+ mobility participants. The OLS is available in 24 languages, including NL (Dutch), FR (French) and EN (English). The coordinator internationalisation can give you an account. You can also follow a language course at for example Linguapolis (https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/centres/linguapolis/). An alternative would be to depart earlier and follow a language course abroad. That period will be included in your Erasmus stay.

Application and selection procedure
  • Step 1: Contact the Coordinator Internationalization of the Antwerp Maritime Academy in case you want to learn a language before you go abroad.
  • Step 2: The Coordinator Internationalization will create a license for you.
