Research
Research at Antwerp Maritime Academy (AMA) is based on interdisciplinary questions and an integrated approach. The academy capitalises on its unique position within national and international maritime networks and actively seeks collaborations across disciplinary boundaries.
An interdisciplinary and practice-oriented focus
AMA combines practice-oriented and applied research. Applied research builds on fundamental scientific knowledge and applies it to real-life situations and cases. Practice-oriented research arises from concrete questions within education and professional practice. It aims to develop multidisciplinary solutions that can be put to immediate use in the field. Both forms adhere to academic traditions and quality standards of full-fledged research. They rely on methodological precision: a correct experimental design, statistical analysis, design engineering, objective surveying, and a clearly formulated research question following the SMART‑principle.
For AMA, academisation does not mean abandoning its practical approach, but rather strengthening research methodology and deepening insights. This keeps the research firmly anchored in maritime reality while contributing to scientific progress and innovation within the sector.

Research Groups
Research at AMA is organised around four areas of expertise. Within the research group Corrosion and Fouling researchers study material degradation and biofouling, and develop innovative techniques and solutions to address these challenges. The Sustainable Transport team focuses on emissions reduction, alternative energy sources, and more efficient ship operations. Additionally, Maritime Health and Wellbeing concentrates on the wellbeing of seafarers, while Maritime Security is committed to both digital and physical resilience within shipping and port logistics. These knowledge domains are closely aligned with AMA's programmes and are continuously shaped by concrete questions and challenges from the maritime sector.
Corrosion and Fouling
AMACORT (Antwerp Maritime Academy CORrosion Team) works on topics regarding maritime corrosion, corrosion modelling and antifouling technology.

Sustainable Transport
The Sustainable Transport research group specializes in the impact that ships have on our well-being, health and environment. We are building expertise on air quality in and around ships, measures that improve air quality, but also on preventive maintenance of engines and energy management, among other things.

Maritime Security
Shipping plays a crucial role in our society. Almost everything we use every day was once transported by ship. But the sector also faces new challenges. Cyberattacks, geopolitical tensions and other security risks are making the maritime world increasingly complex. That is why Antwerp Maritime Academy (AMA) invests heavily in research and innovation.
